Plants placed in offices, homes, hospitals, or even hospitals help people heal faster and offer a soothing environment after hectic and busy hours of working. It is therefore important to ensure that our cities, offices and homes have green spaces. It is common knowledge that through plants biological processes improve air/oxygen. Our current urban environments such as Nairobi City, have fast become concrete jungles and there is an urgency to reverse this environmental order. With the current rains in our country and the official launch of The National Tree Planting Day with the theme ‘Panda Miti Penda Kenya’  by H. E Uhuru Kenyatta, our cities stand to benefit from this double portion of political goodwill and good weather to kick start a fervent ‘city greening’ effort.

For starters, any business in Kenya participate in improving our environment. Workspaces have to be designed in a manner that makes employees feel more comfortable and proactive because they spend most of their time in the office. Plants are incredibly beneficial to indoor workspaces, not only because they boost employee morale, but they also have air purifying qualities. All plants can act as air cleaners, but some are more beneficial than others when it comes to removing toxins in the air.

Many buildings serve purposes other than just giving us a roof over our head for shelter. Buildings such as hotels, University halls, restaurants, offices, malls, banking halls etc. seek to offer inhabitants a sense of calmness, refuge and tranquility from the hustle and bustle elsewhere. This helps people want to stay in the buildings longer, to shop more, relax more, linger, have a bite to eat, concentrate with ease and more. However noise abounds in buildings through phone chatter, footsteps on hard floors, unwanted conversations in adjacent cubicles printers HVAC and the list goes on and on. This noise is distracting, interruptive, makes employees less productive, reduces privacy and to a great extent taints the customer’s experience.

Fortunately the hero to our rescue from unwanted noise levels in our buildings is the plants. The plants mitigate this through various ways such as sound absorption, noise deflection and sound wave refraction. How do plants do this? Plant parts such as stems, leaves, branches, wood, etc. absorb sound. Rough bark and thick, fleshy leaves are particularly effective at absorbing sound due to their dynamic surface area.
